All dental emergencies are frightening. Some of these can be avoided with a proper oral hygiene routine and regular visits to the dentist.
Toothaches
Cavities left untreated can lead to severe toothaches. When decay penetrates the enamel of the tooth, it irritates the nerves inside the pulp, causing intense pain.
Abscesses
When decay spreads, destructive bacteria can reach the tooth root, creating an abscess. This condition is always an emergency. An abscess can spread to other teeth and threaten the health of soft-tissue and bone. To prevent a true dental emergency from occurring, it’s important to schedule an appointment with a dentist as soon as any tooth pain is experienced. Early tooth pain is indicative of decay and may be treated with a simple filling. Prolonging treatment increases the risk of more extensive damage and the need for an invasive procedure.
Dental Injuries
Unfortunately, while extreme discomfort due to tooth decay is preventable, many dental emergencies, like sports injuries or accidents are impossible to predict.
Dislodged Tooth
Accidents can cause a tooth to be knocked out (avulsed). When this happens, immediate attention from a dental professional is very important. A dentist can sometimes replant the tooth so that it re-attaches to the socket. If you lose a tooth, follow these steps:
- Hold the tooth by the crown and do not touch the root.
- Gently rinse the tooth with warm water, removing any dirt or debris.
- Gently reinsert the tooth into the socket.
- If unable to reinsert the tooth, hold the tooth in the cheek pocket or place it in warm, lightly salted water.
- Children’s teeth can be placed either in milk or lightly salted water to avoid choking.
Broken Teeth or Crowns
While a chipped or cracked tooth is not always an emergency, a broken tooth must be addressed promptly. A root canal may be able to save the tooth.
If a tooth is too damaged to be saved, extraction is necessary and the dentist may recommend a dental implant or bridge.
If a crown slips off a tooth, it is important to see a dentist as soon as possible. With age and time, slight changes in the structures of teeth and jaws may cause the need for crowns to be adjusted. Purchase a dental adhesive at a local drugstore to reattach the crown until you see a dentist. Crowns not placed on teeth quickly allow the gums to undergo changes which can cause complications when being reattached.
